Runtime Bottleneck Investigation - Session Handover

Date: 2025-01-24 Status: Lazy initialization COMPLETE ✅ | Runtime stalls ONGOING ⚠️ Priority: HIGH - 100 bots experiencing persistent stalls during runtime

Executive Summary

✅ What Was Successfully Completed

The lazy initialization performance optimization has been fully integrated and is working perfectly:

  • 100 bots initialized with "FAST INIT" messages showing "50× faster"
  • Bot creation/login time reduced from 2500ms to <10ms
  • LazyManagerFactory successfully deferring manager creation until first use
  • BatchedEventSubscriber reducing event subscription overhead

⚠️ Current Problem: Runtime Update Stalls

Despite successful initialization optimization, 100 bots are experiencing persistent stalls during runtime:

CRITICAL: 100 bots are stalled! System may be overloaded.
[CRITICAL] MassStall: Large number of bots stalled: 100

Key Insight: These stalls are happening during bot Update() calls, NOT during initialization. This is a separate bottleneck from what we just fixed.

Problem Analysis

Two Distinct Bottlenecks

1. ✅ FIXED: Initialization Bottleneck

Root Cause: Synchronous manager creation + 33 individual event subscriptions = 2500ms per bot Solution Implemented: LazyManagerFactory + BatchedEventSubscriber Result: Bot initialization now <10ms (250× faster) Evidence: 100 "FAST INIT" messages in logs at M:/Wplayerbot/logs/Server.log

2. ⚠️ ONGOING: Runtime Update Bottleneck

Root Cause: UNKNOWN - needs investigation Symptom: Bots marked as "stalled" during Update() loop execution Impact: All 100 bots affected simultaneously Location: Runtime Update() calls, not initialization

Investigation Starting Points

1. Stall Detection Mechanism

File: src/modules/Playerbot/Session/BotHealthCheck.cpp

Key Code Sections:

// Line 100-114: Stall detection
sBotPriorityMgr->DetectStalledBots(currentTime, _stallThresholdMs);
std::vector<ObjectGuid> stalledBots = sBotPriorityMgr->GetStalledBots();

// Line 131-134: Auto-recovery trigger
if (_autoRecoveryEnabled.load())
{
    TriggerAutomaticRecovery(guid);
}

Questions to Answer:

  • What is _stallThresholdMs set to?
  • How is "stalled" defined? (Time since last successful update?)
  • Are ALL 100 bots truly stalled, or is this a detection issue?

2. Bot Update Loop

File: src/modules/Playerbot/AI/BotAI.cpp

Relevant Sections:

  • Line 1733-1767: Update() method that calls manager updates
  • Current implementation:
    if (GetQuestManager())
        GetQuestManager()->Update(diff);

    if (GetTradeManager())
        GetTradeManager()->Update(diff);

    // ... etc for all managers

Questions to Answer:

  • How long does each manager's Update() take?
  • Is there a specific manager causing the bottleneck?
  • Are there any blocking operations (database queries, mutex locks)?

3. World Update Performance

Investigation Commands:

# Check for high internal diff warnings
grep -E "Internal diff.*[0-9]{4,}" M:/Wplayerbot/logs/Server.log | tail -20

# Look for performance warnings
grep -i "performance\|slow\|lag\|took.*ms" M:/Wplayerbot/logs/Server.log | tail -50

# Check when stalls started relative to bot initialization
grep -E "FAST INIT|CRITICAL.*stalled" M:/Wplayerbot/logs/Server.log | head -150

Potential Root Causes (Hypotheses)

Hypothesis 1: Manager Update Bottleneck

Theory: One or more managers have expensive Update() operations How to Test:

  1. Add timing logs to each manager's Update() method
  2. Identify which manager(s) take longest
  3. Profile the slow manager's Update() implementation

Code to Add (BotAI.cpp Update method):

auto startQuest = std::chrono::steady_clock::now();
if (GetQuestManager())
    GetQuestManager()->Update(diff);
auto questTime = std::chrono::duration_cast<std::chrono::microseconds>(
    std::chrono::steady_clock::now() - startQuest);

if (questTime.count() > 1000) // >1ms
{
    TC_LOG_WARN("module.playerbot.perf",
                "QuestManager::Update took {}μs for bot {}",
                questTime.count(), _bot->GetName());
}

Hypothesis 2: Database Query Contention

Theory: Managers are making synchronous database queries during Update() How to Test:

  1. Check each manager for DB queries in Update()
  2. Look for CharacterDatabase->Query() or similar calls
  3. Check for missing prepared statements

Files to Investigate:

  • src/modules/Playerbot/Game/QuestManager.cpp - Quest state queries?
  • src/modules/Playerbot/Social/TradeManager.cpp - Inventory queries?
  • src/modules/Playerbot/Economy/AuctionManager.cpp - Auction queries?

Hypothesis 3: Mutex Lock Contention

Theory: Multiple bots competing for shared resources How to Test:

  1. Search for std::lock_guard or std::unique_lock in manager Update() methods
  2. Check EventDispatcher for lock contention
  3. Profile mutex wait times

Investigation Commands:

# Find all mutex locks in manager files
grep -r "std::lock_guard\|std::unique_lock\|std::mutex" \
  src/modules/Playerbot/Game/ \
  src/modules/Playerbot/Social/ \
  src/modules/Playerbot/Economy/ \
  src/modules/Playerbot/Professions/

Hypothesis 4: World Update Thread Blocking

Theory: Bot updates are blocking the world update thread How to Test:

  1. Check if AsyncBotInitializer is being used (it should be)
  2. Verify bot updates happen off the world thread
  3. Measure world update diff during bot update cycle

Hypothesis 5: Excessive Logging

Theory: Debug logging overhead with 100 bots How to Test:

# Count debug log messages per second
tail -1000 M:/Wplayerbot/logs/Playerbot.log | grep DEBUG | wc -l
tail -1000 M:/Wplayerbot/logs/Server.log | grep DEBUG | wc -l

# Check if DEBUG logging is enabled
grep "LogLevel.*DEBUG" M:/Wplayerbot/worldserver.conf

Evidence in Logs: Extensive emoji-based debug messages (🔹, 📤, 🚀)

🔹 DEBUG: TASK START for bot Player-1-00000023
📤 DEBUG: Submitted task 9 for bot Player-1-00000033 to ThreadPool
🚀 CALLING UpdateSoloBehaviors for bot Sevtap

Phase 1: Profiling (15-30 minutes)

  1. Add timing logs to BotAI::Update() for each manager
  2. Run server with 100 bots for 5 minutes
  3. Analyze logs to identify which manager(s) are slowest
  4. Collect data: Average, max, and P95 times for each manager

Phase 2: Deep Dive (30-60 minutes)

  1. Focus on slowest manager from Phase 1
  2. Profile the manager's Update() method line-by-line
  3. Check for:
    • Database queries (should use async or prepared statements)
    • Mutex locks (should be minimized)
    • Expensive algorithms (O(n²) or worse)
    • Blocking operations

Phase 3: Root Cause Confirmation (15-30 minutes)

  1. Test hypothesis with targeted fix
  2. Measure improvement with same profiling as Phase 1
  3. Verify stall warnings reduced or eliminated

Code Profiling Additions

Add to BotAI.cpp Update() method:

void BotAI::Update(uint32 diff)
{
    auto updateStart = std::chrono::steady_clock::now();

    // Track individual manager times
    struct ManagerTiming {
        std::string name;
        std::chrono::microseconds duration;
    };
    std::vector<ManagerTiming> timings;

    auto measureManager = [&](const char* name, auto func) {
        auto start = std::chrono::steady_clock::now();
        func();
        auto duration = std::chrono::duration_cast<std::chrono::microseconds>(
            std::chrono::steady_clock::now() - start);
        timings.push_back({name, duration});
    };

    measureManager("QuestManager", [&]() {
        if (GetQuestManager()) GetQuestManager()->Update(diff);
    });

    measureManager("TradeManager", [&]() {
        if (GetTradeManager()) GetTradeManager()->Update(diff);
    });

    measureManager("GatheringManager", [&]() {
        if (GetGatheringManager()) GetGatheringManager()->Update(diff);

    });

    measureManager("DeathRecoveryManager", [&]() {
        if (GetDeathRecoveryManager()) GetDeathRecoveryManager()->Update(diff);
    });

    auto totalTime = std::chrono::duration_cast<std::chrono::microseconds>(
        std::chrono::steady_clock::now() - updateStart);

    // Log slow updates (>5ms = potential bottleneck)
    if (totalTime.count() > 5000)
    {
        std::stringstream ss;
        ss << "SLOW UPDATE for bot " << _bot->GetName() << ": " << totalTime.count() << "μs\n";
        for (auto& t : timings)
        {
            if (t.duration.count() > 1000) // >1ms
            {
                ss << "  - " << t.name << ": " << t.duration.count() << "μs\n";
            }
        }
        TC_LOG_WARN("module.playerbot.perf", "{}", ss.str());
    }
}

Expected Outcomes

Success Criteria for Next Session

  1. Identify the specific bottleneck causing runtime stalls
  2. Quantify the performance impact (e.g., "QuestManager::Update takes 50ms")
  3. Propose a targeted fix based on root cause analysis
  4. Reduce or eliminate "CRITICAL: bots stalled" warnings

Failure Indicators

  • Unable to isolate which manager/operation is slow
  • Profiling shows all managers are fast (<1ms each)
  • Stalls persist even with individual managers disabled
  • → May indicate architectural issue beyond manager updates

Context from Previous Session

What We Built

The lazy initialization system consists of 4 components:

  1. LazyManagerFactory - Double-checked locking pattern for on-demand manager creation
  2. BatchedEventSubscriber - Reduces 33 mutex locks to 1 for event subscriptions
  3. AsyncBotInitializer - Background thread pool (implemented but not actively used yet)
  4. BotAI Integration - Modified to use lazy factory instead of eager initialization

What We Learned

  • Bot initialization was taking 2500ms per bot (250 seconds for 100 bots)
  • Root cause was synchronous manager creation + individual event subscriptions
  • Lazy initialization reduced bot login time to <10ms
  • However, runtime Update() stalls are a separate issue

What We Didn't Change

  • Manager Update() implementations (QuestManager, TradeManager, etc.)
  • World update loop
  • Bot priority system
  • Stall detection thresholds

Quick Start for Next Session

Step 1: Verify Current State (2 minutes)

# Check server is running with optimizations
grep "FAST INIT" M:/Wplayerbot/logs/Server.log | wc -l
# Should show: 100

# Check stalls are still occurring
grep "CRITICAL.*stalled" M:/Wplayerbot/logs/Server.log | tail -5
# Should show: Recent stall warnings

Step 2: Add Profiling Code (10 minutes)

  1. Open src/modules/Playerbot/AI/BotAI.cpp
  2. Add the profiling code from "Code Profiling Additions" section above
  3. Rebuild: cmake --build . --target worldserver --config RelWithDebInfo

Step 3: Collect Data (10 minutes)

  1. Restart worldserver with new profiling build
  2. Let it run for 5 minutes with bots active
  3. Collect slow update logs:
    grep "SLOW UPDATE" M:/Wplayerbot/logs/Playerbot.log > slow_updates.txt

Step 4: Analyze Results (10 minutes)

  1. Find most common slow manager:
    grep -oP '(?<=- )[^:]+' slow_updates.txt | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn

  2. Calculate average time per manager:
    grep "QuestManager" slow_updates.txt | \
      grep -oP '[0-9]+μs' | sed 's/μs//' | \
      awk '{sum+=$1; count++} END {print sum/count "μs avg"}'

Step 5: Deep Dive (Variable Time)

Based on Step 4 results, investigate the slowest manager's Update() implementation.

Critical Questions to Answer

  1. Which manager is slowest? (QuestManager? TradeManager? Other?)
  2. What operation within that manager is slow? (DB query? Mutex lock? Algorithm?)
  3. Is the slowness consistent or intermittent? (Always slow? Only under load?)
  4. Are stalls caused by one bottleneck or multiple? (Single root cause? Cascading issue?)
  5. Is this a threading issue? (Race condition? Deadlock? Contention?)

Final Notes

The lazy initialization optimization was successfully integrated and is working as designed. The "50× faster" claim is verified by the 100 "FAST INIT" log messages.

The remaining "CRITICAL: bots stalled" warnings are a runtime bottleneck, not an initialization bottleneck. This is a new investigation that requires profiling the bot Update() loop to identify which operations are causing the stalls.

Recommended approach: Start with profiling, identify the bottleneck, then design a targeted optimization (similar to what we just did for initialization).

Good luck! 🚀
