Technical Issues Resolved
Issue #1: GTest Test Registration Failure
Problem: MSVC linker was stripping GTest's static test registration code, resulting in "This test program does NOT link in any test case" error.
Root Cause: Google Test uses static initializers to register tests. MSVC's aggressive link-time optimization (LTO) removes "unreferenced" symbols, including test registration code.
Attempted Solutions:
- ❌
/OPT:NOREFlinker flag - ineffective - ❌
/OPT:NOICFlinker flag - ineffective - ❌
/WHOLEARCHIVEgenerator expression - syntax errors - ❌
/FORCE:MULTIPLE- risky, could hide real issues
Final Solution:
Created custom main() function (Tests/Phase3/Unit/CustomMain.cpp) and removed GTest::gtest_main from link libraries. This forces the linker to include all test object files since they're compiled into the same executable as main().
Files Modified:
Tests/CMakeLists.txt: RemovedGTest::gtest_main,GTest::gmock_mainTests/Phase3/Unit/CustomMain.cpp: Created custom test entry point
Issue #2: ObjectGuid Circular Dependencies
Problem: Mock classes using ObjectGuid required linking against TrinityCore libraries, creating circular dependencies.
Solution: Created lightweight MockGuid class (64-bit value wrapper) to replace ObjectGuid in mock framework.
Files Modified:
Tests/Phase3/Unit/Mocks/MockFramework.h: Added MockGuid classTests/Phase3/Unit/Mocks/MockFramework.cpp: Updated GenerateGUID() to return MockGuidTests/Phase3/Unit/Mocks/MockPriestFramework.h: Changed tankGuid from ObjectGuid to MockGuid
Issue #3: Missing Mock Implementations
Problem: Linker errors for undefined constructors and methods in mock classes.
Solution: Created MockFramework.cpp with complete implementations of all mock class constructors and helper methods using Google Mock's ON_CALL mechanism.
File Created:
Tests/Phase3/Unit/Mocks/MockFramework.cpp(345 lines)
Issue #4: vcpkg Path Configuration
Problem: CMake couldn't find GTest package.
User Correction: Corrected vcpkg path from C:/Repositories/vcpkg to C:/libs/vcpkg.
Solution: Set CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=C:/libs/vcpkg/installed/x64-windows
Failure Analysis & Next Steps
Test Failure Categories
Category 1: Mock Setup Issues (10 failures)
Symptoms: Tests calling SetClass(CLASS_PRIEST) and SetSpec(1) in SetUp() but mocks returning default values.
Root Cause: Mock member variables (m_class, m_spec) not being set because SetClass() and SetSpec() helper methods don't update the backing storage.
Fix Required: Update MockPlayer class to properly store values when Set* methods are called.
Affected Tests:
- Holy: Constructor, GetSpecialization, GetCurrentRole
- Shadow: Constructor, GetSpecialization, GetCurrentRole, + 4 others
Priority: HIGH - Blocking basic validation tests
Category 2: Stub Implementation (5 failures)
Symptoms: Tests with TODO comments or minimal assertion logic.
Root Cause: Tests written as placeholders in Phase 3A Week 1, requiring full implementation.
Fix Required: Implement actual test logic with proper scenario setup and assertions.
Affected Tests:
- Holy: Guardian Spirit, Divine Hymn, Renew duration, Target selection
- Shadow: Edge case handling
Priority: MEDIUM - Defer to Phase 3B
Category 3: Performance Tests (2 failures)
Symptoms: Performance assertion tests failing with mock environment.
Root Cause: Performance tests require real timing measurements, not possible with mocks.
Fix Required: Create integration test environment with actual Player objects for performance validation.
Affected Tests:
- Holy: GetBestHealTarget under 10μs, ResourceCalculations under 3μs
Priority: LOW - Defer to Phase 4 (Performance Optimization)
Recommended Next Steps
Immediate (Phase 3A Week 3):
-
Fix mock setup issues (Category 1) - HIGH PRIORITY
- Update MockPlayer::SetClass() to store m_class
- Update MockPlayer::SetSpec() to store m_spec
- Verify GetClass() and GetSpec() return stored values
-
Verify test coverage for passing tests
- Review assertions in 80 passing tests
- Ensure meaningful validation (not just smoke tests)
Short-term (Phase 3B): 3. Implement stub tests (Category 2)
- Guardian Spirit emergency logic
- Divine Hymn group-wide emergency
- Renew duration tracking
- Target selection priority algorithms
- Create Shadow Priest edge case tests
- Target death mid-cast recovery
- Insanity overflow prevention
Long-term (Phase 4): 5. Performance validation (Category 3)
- Create integration test harness with real Player objects
- Implement actual timing measurements
- Validate <50μs UpdateRotation requirement
