FIX SUMMARY: Creature Trigger Movement Bug
Status: ✅ FIXED AND DEPLOYED
Problem Description
Bots were unable to move toward creature triggers for quest item usage. They remained stuck at their starting distance (typically 139.9 yards) despite repeatedly issuing movement commands. This blocked completion of ALL creature trigger quest objectives.
Root Cause
File: src/modules/Playerbot/AI/Strategy/QuestStrategy.cpp
Lines: 1352-1370 (UseQuestItemOnTarget function)
The movement calculation used the wrong reference point:
// BROKEN: Calculated position near BOT instead of TARGET
float angleFromBot = bot->GetRelativeAngle(targetObject);
bot->GetNearPoint(bot, closePos.m_positionX, closePos.m_positionY, closePos.m_positionZ,
safeDistance, angleFromBot);
This created a position only ~11 yards from the bot's current location, causing the bot to move slightly forward but never close the gap to the target.
The Fix
Changed the calculation to use the target as the reference point:
// FIXED: Calculate position near TARGET
float angleFromTarget = targetObject->GetRelativeAngle(bot);
targetObject->GetNearPoint(bot, closePos.m_positionX, closePos.m_positionY, closePos.m_positionZ,
safeDistance, angleFromTarget);
Now the bot moves to a position that is safeDistance yards from the target, properly closing the gap.

Expected Behavior
Before Fix
[Update 1] Distance: 139.9yd → Move to position 11yd from bot
[Update 2] Distance: 139.9yd → Move to position 11yd from bot (stuck)
[Update 3] Distance: 139.9yd → Move to position 11yd from bot (stuck)
... infinite loop, bot never reaches target ...
After Fix
[Update 1] Distance: 139.9yd → Move to position 11yd from target (start travel)
[Update 2] Distance: 100yd → Still traveling
[Update 3] Distance: 60yd → Still traveling
[Update 4] Distance: 15yd → Arrived at target
[Update 5] Distance: 15yd → Use quest item (SUCCESS)
Testing Instructions
Test Quest
- Quest ID: 13672 "Beating Them Back"
- Location: Scarlet Enclave (Death Knight starting zone)
- Quest Item: 45072 (Inv_misc_horn_03)
- Target: Creature 33737 (Scarlet Crusade Soldier)
Success Criteria
- Bot spawns and accepts quest
- Bot travels to objective area
- Bot detects creature trigger at distance >30yd
- Bot distance DECREASES over time (not stuck)
- Bot reaches 11-30yd range
- Bot uses quest item on target
- Quest progress updates (0/8 → 1/8 → 2/8 ... → 8/8)
- Bot completes quest
Expected Log Output
📏 UseQuestItemOnTarget: Bot distance to target=139.9yd (safe range: 11.0-30.0yd)
⚠️ UseQuestItemOnTarget: Bot TOO FAR from target (139.9yd > 30.0yd) - MOVING TOWARD TARGET
🏃 UseQuestItemOnTarget: Moving TOWARD target to safe position (...) at distance 11.0yd from target
[... bot travels toward target ...]
📏 UseQuestItemOnTarget: Bot distance to target=15.0yd (safe range: 11.0-30.0yd)
✅ UseQuestItemOnTarget: Bot in safe range (15.0yd), health 100.0%, preparing to use item
🛑 UseQuestItemOnTarget: Bot stopped moving
👁️ UseQuestItemOnTarget: Bot now facing target 33737 (Creature)
🎯 UseQuestItemOnTarget: Casting spell on Creature
✅ Quest progress updated: 1/8
Technical Details
API Usage Comparison
GetRelativeAngle()
float GetRelativeAngle(WorldObject const* obj) const;
Returns angle FROM this object TO target object.
Example:
bot->GetRelativeAngle(target)= angle from bot toward targettarget->GetRelativeAngle(bot)= angle from target toward bot
GetNearPoint()
void GetNearPoint(WorldObject* searcher, float& x, float& y, float& z,
float distance, float angle);
Creates a point at distance yards from this object at the given angle.
Example:
bot->GetNearPoint(..., 10.0f, angle)= point 10 yards from bottarget->GetNearPoint(..., 10.0f, angle)= point 10 yards from target
Why This Matters
Spatial Geometry:
Bot position: A
Target position: B
Distance A→B: 139.9 yards
Desired distance to B: 11 yards
WRONG CALCULATION (old code):
- Get angle from A toward B
- Create point 11 yards from A in that direction
- Result: Point C is 11 yards from A, still 128+ yards from B
CORRECT CALCULATION (new code):
- Get angle from B toward A
- Create point 11 yards from B in that direction
- Result: Point C is 11 yards from B (on line between A and B)
Impact
Systems Affected
- ✅ All creature trigger quest objectives (QUEST_OBJECTIVE_TYPE_PLAYER_CREATURE_KILLED = 1)
- ✅ Quests using spell-cast items on creatures
- ✅ Safety distance calculations (damage avoidance)
Systems NOT Affected
- GameObject interaction (different code path)
- Kill objectives (different code path)
- Exploration objectives (different code path)
- "Too close" movement (was already correct)
Performance
- No performance impact
- Same computational complexity
- Same number of API calls
Related Code Patterns
The "Too Close" Logic (Already Correct)
Lines 1331-1351 handle bots that are too close to targets:
float angleToBot = targetObject->GetRelativeAngle(bot); // FROM target TO bot
targetObject->GetNearPoint(bot, safePos..., safeDistance, angleToBot); // Point near TARGET
This was already implemented correctly and served as the reference for fixing the "too far" logic.

Commit Message Template
fix(playerbot): Correct movement calculation for creature trigger quests
PROBLEM:
- Bots stuck at initial distance from creature triggers
- Movement commands issued but position not changing
- Quest item never used, objectives never completed
ROOT CAUSE:
- GetNearPoint() called on bot instead of target
- Created position near bot's current location
- Bot moved toward own position, not toward target
SOLUTION:
- Changed bot->GetNearPoint() to targetObject->GetNearPoint()
- Changed bot->GetRelativeAngle() to targetObject->GetRelativeAngle()
- Position now calculated relative to target location
IMPACT:
- Fixes all creature trigger quest objectives
- Bots can now complete quests like "Beating Them Back" (13672)
- No performance impact, purely geometric calculation fix
