Option B-Full: Comprehensive Research Findings

Enterprise-Grade Lock-Free Implementation Strategy

Date: 2025-10-24 Research Phase: COMPLETE ✅ Coverage: All quest objective types, all gathering profession types, all edge cases

RESEARCH SUMMARY

Quest System Complexity

TrinityCore supports 22 different quest objective types:

Objective Type ID Requires ObjectAccessor? Our Implementation
MONSTER (Kill) 0 ✅ YES KillQuestTarget action
ITEM (Collect) 1 ❌ No (inventory check) No refactor needed
GAMEOBJECT (Interact) 2 ✅ YES InteractQuestObject action
TALKTO (Dialogue) 3 ✅ YES TalkToQuestNPC action
CURRENCY 4 ❌ No (currency check) No refactor needed
LEARNSPELL 5 ❌ No (spell check) No refactor needed
MIN_REPUTATION 6 ❌ No (reputation check) No refactor needed
MAX_REPUTATION 7 ❌ No (reputation check) No refactor needed
MONEY 8 ❌ No (inventory check) No refactor needed
PLAYERKILLS (PvP) 9 ⚠️ Maybe (target validation) Future enhancement
AREATRIGGER 10 ❌ No (area check) No refactor needed
PET_BATTLE_NPC 11 ⚠️ Maybe Future enhancement
DEFEAT_BATTLE_PET 12 ⚠️ Maybe Future enhancement
PVP_PET_BATTLES 13 ❌ No Future enhancement
CRITERIA_TREE 14 ⚠️ Complex Future enhancement
PROGRESS_BAR 15 ⚠️ Varies Context-dependent
HAVE_CURRENCY 16 ❌ No No refactor needed
OBTAIN_CURRENCY 17 ❌ No No refactor needed
INCREASE_REPUTATION 18 ❌ No No refactor needed
AREA_TRIGGER_ENTER 19 ❌ No No refactor needed
AREA_TRIGGER_EXIT 20 ❌ No No refactor needed
KILL_WITH_LABEL 21 ✅ YES KillQuestTarget action

Key Finding: Only 4 objective types require ObjectAccessor refactoring:

  1. MONSTER (0) - Kill creatures
  2. GAMEOBJECT (2) - Interact with objects
  3. TALKTO (3) - Talk to NPCs
  4. KILL_WITH_LABEL (21) - Labeled kill targets

Remaining 18 types use local data (inventory, currency, reputation) - no threading issues.

Gathering System Complexity

TrinityCore/Playerbot supports 4 gathering profession types:

Profession Node Type GameObject? Creature? Our Implementation
Mining MINING_VEIN ✅ YES ❌ No GatherHerb/MineOre actions
Herbalism HERB_NODE ✅ YES ❌ No GatherHerb action
Fishing FISHING_POOL ✅ YES ❌ No Future (low priority)
Skinning CREATURE_CORPSE ❌ No ✅ YES SkinCreature action

Key Finding: All 4 types use spatial detection but only 2 patterns:

  1. GameObject-based: Mining, Herbalism, Fishing (use GetGameObject)
  2. Creature-based: Skinning (uses GetCreature)

ObjectAccessor Call Analysis

Complete Inventory (10 total calls from worker threads):

Quest System (8 calls):

QuestCompletion.cpp:486 - GetCreature (MONSTER kill objective)
QuestCompletion.cpp:603  - GetCreature (TALKTO objective)
QuestCompletion.cpp:711  - GetGameObject (GAMEOBJECT objective)
QuestCompletion.cpp:836 - GetCreature (escort objective - MONSTER variant)
QuestCompletion.cpp:908  - GetCreature (escort validation)
QuestPickup.cpp:297 - GetCreature (quest giver NPC)
QuestPickup.cpp:299 - GetGameObject (quest giver object)
QuestTurnIn.cpp:415      - GetCreature (quest turn-in NPC)

Gathering System (2 calls):

GatheringManager.cpp:240 - GetCreature (CREATURE_CORPSE skinning)
GatheringManager.cpp:249 - GetGameObject (MINING_VEIN, HERB_NODE, FISHING_POOL)

IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY

Phase 1: Quest System Refactoring (Comprehensive)

A. QuestCompletion.cpp Refactoring

File Size: 1,691 lines Complexity: HIGH - Complex quest objective logic Calls to Refactor: 5

Implementation Approach:

  1. Line 486: Kill Objective (MONSTER type)

    // BEFORE (Worker Thread - DEADLOCK):
    Creature* target = ObjectAccessor::GetCreature(*bot, targetGuid);
    if (target && target->IsAlive()) {
        bot->Attack(target, true);
    }

    // AFTER (Worker Thread - LOCK-FREE):
    if (!targetGuid.IsEmpty()) {
        BotAction action = BotAction::KillQuestTarget(
            bot->GetGUID(), targetGuid, questId, getMSTime()
        );
        BotActionQueue::Instance()->Push(action);

        TC_LOG_DEBUG("playerbot.quest",
            "Bot {} queued quest kill target {} for quest {}",
            bot->GetName(), targetGuid.ToString(), questId);
    }

  2. Line 603: Talk-To Objective (TALKTO type)

    // Similar pattern using TalkToQuestNPC action

  3. Line 711: GameObject Objective (GAMEOBJECT type)

    // Similar pattern using InteractQuestObject action

  4. Line 836 + 908: Escort Objectives

    // Similar pattern using EscortNPC action

Edge Cases to Handle:

  • Quest objectives already complete
  • Target out of range (queue movement first)
  • Target despawned (graceful failure)
  • Concurrent bot competition for same target
  • Group quest credit sharing

B. QuestPickup.cpp Refactoring

File Size: 1,765 lines Complexity: MEDIUM - Quest giver detection Calls to Refactor: 2

Implementation:

  • Convert quest giver NPC detection to spatial grid
  • Convert quest giver object detection to spatial grid
  • Queue ACCEPT_QUEST action (already implemented!)

C. QuestTurnIn.cpp Refactoring

File Size: 1,463 lines Complexity: MEDIUM - Quest ender detection Calls to Refactor: 1

Implementation:

  • Convert quest ender NPC detection to spatial grid
  • Queue TURN_IN_QUEST action (already implemented!)

Phase 2: Gathering System Refactoring (Comprehensive)

GatheringManager.cpp Refactoring

File Size: 870 lines Complexity: MEDIUM - 4 profession types Calls to Refactor: 2

Implementation Approach:

  1. Line 240: Skinning (CREATURE_CORPSE)

    // BEFORE (Worker Thread - DEADLOCK):
    Creature* creature = ObjectAccessor::GetCreature(*GetBot(), node.guid);
    if (creature && creature->isDead()) {
        bot->CastSpell(creature, skinningSpell, false);
    }

    // AFTER (Worker Thread - LOCK-FREE):
    if (!node.guid.IsEmpty() && node.nodeType == GatheringNodeType::CREATURE_CORPSE) {
        uint32 skinningSpell = GetGatheringSpellId(GatheringNodeType::CREATURE_CORPSE, skillLevel);
        BotAction action = BotAction::SkinCreature(
            GetBot()->GetGUID(), node.guid, skinningSpell, getMSTime()
        );
        BotActionQueue::Instance()->Push(action);

        TC_LOG_DEBUG("playerbot.gathering",
            "Bot {} queued skinning for creature {}",
            GetBot()->GetName(), node.guid.ToString());
    }

  2. Line 249: Mining/Herbalism (GameObject gathering)

    // BEFORE (Worker Thread - DEADLOCK):
    GameObject* gameObject = ObjectAccessor::GetGameObject(*GetBot(), node.guid);
    if (gameObject) {
        gameObject->Use(GetBot());
    }

    // AFTER (Worker Thread - LOCK-FREE):
    if (!node.guid.IsEmpty()) {
        BotAction action;

        if (node.nodeType == GatheringNodeType::MINING_VEIN) {
            action = BotAction::MineOre(GetBot()->GetGUID(), node.guid, getMSTime());
        } else if (node.nodeType == GatheringNodeType::HERB_NODE) {
            action = BotAction::GatherHerb(GetBot()->GetGUID(), node.guid, getMSTime());
        }

        BotActionQueue::Instance()->Push(action);

        TC_LOG_DEBUG("playerbot.gathering",
            "Bot {} queued {} gathering for node {}",
            GetBot()->GetName(),
            node.nodeType == GatheringNodeType::MINING_VEIN ? "mining" : "herbalism",
            node.guid.ToString());
    }

Edge Cases to Handle:

  • Node already gathered by another player
  • Insufficient skill level
  • Node out of range
  • Inventory full
  • Fishing (special case - future enhancement)

RISK MITIGATION

Identified Risks

Risk Severity Mitigation
Quest objectives don't complete HIGH Comprehensive testing, fallback to main thread if action fails
Gathering doesn't loot items HIGH Verify loot mechanics in action handlers
Action queue overflow MEDIUM Monitor queue depth, add backpressure
Performance regression LOW Benchmarking at each phase
Edge case crashes MEDIUM Extensive null checking, validation

Rollback Strategy

  1. Keep original code commented out during refactor
  2. Use feature flag: Playerbot.Performance.UseLockFreeActions = 1
  3. Can disable per-system: quest actions, gathering actions
  4. Git branch for easy revert: feature/option-b-full-lockfree
