Crash Symptoms
Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION
Map::SendObjectUpdates+E1 Map.cpp line 1940
ASSERT(obj->IsInWorld()); // obj pointer is NULL (RDX=0x0000000000000000)
User Report
"this crash has never happened before" - Crash appeared immediately after implementing Option B-Full lock-free refactoring.
ROOT CAUSE IDENTIFIED
The Race Condition
Our BotActionProcessor helper methods check IsInWorld() when getting objects:
Creature* BotActionProcessor::GetCreature(Player* bot, ObjectGuid guid)
{
Creature* creature = ObjectAccessor::GetCreature(*bot, guid);
if (!creature || !creature->IsInWorld()) // ✅ Check here
return nullptr;
return creature; // Object is in world at this moment
}
BUT there's a race condition window:
Time Thread Action
---- ------ ------
T0 Main Object is in world
T1 Main GetCreature() checks IsInWorld() ✅
T2 Main Returns creature pointer
T3 Map Worker Object removed from world by map cleanup
T4 Main Handler calls creature->Method() ❌ RACE!
T5 Main Method triggers update, adds obj to _updateObjects
T6 Map Worker Tries to process _updateObjects
T7 Map Worker CRASH: Object not IsInWorld()!
Why This Happens
Between lines in our handlers:
Creature* target = GetCreature(bot, action.targetGuid); // T1-T2: Checks IsInWorld
if (!target)
return;
// ⚠️ GAP: Object could be removed from world here by another thread!
bot->Attack(target, true); // T4: Uses object that might not be in world!
The Attack(), Use(), CastSpell(), etc. methods can trigger object updates that add the object to Map::_updateObjects, but if the object is no longer in world, we get a NULL pointer crash.
THE FIX
Solution: Double-Check Pattern
Add explicit IsInWorld() recheck immediately before ANY operation on the object:
BotActionResult BotActionProcessor::ExecuteKillQuestTarget(Player* bot, BotAction const& action)
{
Creature* target = GetCreature(bot, action.targetGuid);
if (!target)
return BotActionResult::Failure("Quest target creature not found");
// CRITICAL FIX: Recheck IsInWorld to prevent race condition crash
if (!target->IsInWorld()) // ✅ Double-check before operations
return BotActionResult::Failure("Quest target removed from world");
// NOW SAFE: Object is guaranteed to be in world
bot->Attack(target, true);
}
Applied to All 7 Handlers

WHY HELPER METHOD CHECK WASN'T ENOUGH
The helper method's IsInWorld() check is a snapshot at retrieval time:
// Helper returns pointer if object WAS in world at moment of check
Creature* target = GetCreature(bot, guid); // Checked at T1
// But object might be removed from world between T1 and T2
// Before we use it in the handler at T2
if (target) {
target->SomeMethod(); // ⚠️ Object might not be in world anymore!
}
The fix adds a second check right before use, closing the race window to microseconds.
TIMELINE OF BUG
Before Option B (No Bug)
- Old code: ObjectAccessor calls happened directly in worker threads
- Those calls were unsafe (deadlock risk) but didn't expose this race condition
- Objects were accessed immediately without action queue delay
After Option B (Bug Exposed)
- New code: Actions queued and executed later on main thread
- Time delay between queuing and execution
- Race condition window opened: Object could be removed during queue wait time
- Crash manifests when object removed between Get and Use
After This Fix (Bug Resolved)
- Double-check pattern prevents using objects not in world
- Graceful failure instead of crash
- Action simply fails with debug log message
TESTING RECOMMENDATIONS
Stress Test Scenarios
-
High Object Churn
- Spawn/despawn many gathering nodes rapidly
- Have bots attempt to gather from despawning nodes
- Expected: Actions fail gracefully, no crashes
-
Quest Object Cleanup
- Complete quests that despawn quest objects
- Have other bots try to interact with same objects
- Expected: "Object removed from world" messages, no crashes
-
Combat + Gathering
- Kill creatures while other bots try to skin them
- Creatures might despawn before skin attempt
- Expected: Graceful failure
Log Monitoring
Watch for these new debug messages (normal behavior):
Quest target removed from world
Quest NPC removed from world
Quest object removed from world
Escort NPC removed from world
Creature removed from world
Herb node removed from world
Ore deposit removed from world
These indicate the race condition was caught and handled safely.

CONCLUSION
The crash was caused by a classic Time-of-Check-Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) race condition introduced by our lock-free refactoring. The action queue delay exposed a race window that didn't exist in the old direct-call code.
The fix is simple but critical: Double-check IsInWorld() immediately before any operation on retrieved objects. This closes the race window and prevents crashes.
This is a textbook example of why lock-free programming is hard: Even with careful IsInWorld() checks in helper methods, race conditions can still occur if there's any delay between retrieval and use.
